Quadriceps
The quadriceps are the 4 muscles at the front of your thigh.
The function of the quadriceps is to extend the knee.
In yoga you’ll hear a lot “lift quadriceps up” or “engage your quadriceps”. This is done to:
- Help to keep the knee cap in alignment.
- Strong legs means healthy back.
- Brings the pelvis in the right position.
- Strengthens legs.
Try this out, when you stand in Mountain Pose, firm and than pull the quadriceps up with your hands, towards your hips. This is what is meant when yoga teachers say, “engage your quadriceps”, or “lift your quadriceps up”.

But “anatomically” how does one lift the quadriceps? How does one explain that via kinesiology?
