Yoga for Beginners – Part 1
Hi Everyone,
For all of you who want to do yoga, but don’t know how! There’s no time like the present to start practicing , Just start…, begin with this part one. Slowly get used to some of the basic standing poses that I will go through in this part and the next few. Your body will begin to get stronger with repetition and you’ll get used to the instructions. Most important of all is to end with a few minutes of relaxation to let whatever you’ve done integrate in the body and to observe what it has done for you.
The poses I demonstrate here are:
cat pose / marjaryasana
cow pose / tibilasana
mountain pose / tadasana
standing forward bend / uttanasana
low lunge / anjaneyasana
downward facing dog / adho mukha svanasana
warrior I / virabhadrasana I
warrior II / virabhadrasana II
enjoy,
Esther

Comment by Samantha Nov 20, 08, 1:29 pmI am really happy I discovered this website! It is a real pleasure to watch Esther’s instructions and form. I am a beginning yoga student and have been able to correct many of my poses. Including being able to perform a head stand for the first time. I am also able to briefly do the wheel pose.
Thank you Esther for your devotion,

I love your website! I appreciate you taking the time to put up all of these videos and describing the poses so clearly. I live in the US, but I wish I was in Ireland, so I could learn from you in person
Comment by Vaishnavi Dec 23, 08, 4:50 pmHi esther,
i’m from philippines, i really want to start doing yoga but the problem is, there’s no any yoga school in our place. Can i just do it by myself or is it really necessary to look for a teacher? thank you
Comment by MARK Jan 03, 09, 3:53 pmA teacher is always the best. But don’t let that stop you! Start away, if you are interested buy some good books, you can look at my list of recommended yoga books on my website. And just go for it! Don’t do anything that hurts, Be respectful of your boundaries and look at my video yoga principles.

Hi Esther!!!
I just wanted to let you know that since I have been doing your yoga videos I have felt more energized and happy. I just want to say thank you for doing these videos for free. You explain so well and I feel much more educated about yoga now. Thank you again.
Comment by Barbara Jan 19, 09, 2:17 pmHello Esthar,
I’m a beginner, I’ve started practicing yoga a few weeks ago, and just came across your web-site. It is wonderful, and so are you!
Would you be kind to tell me, in which order should the asanas be performed, how to follow your videos, so I can make one hour long program that I can do when I’m at home.
If you already wrote somewhere about this, please be kind to tell me where.
I wish you all the best!

Comment by Ana Feb 28, 09, 5:45 pmHello Ana,
Comment by Esther Mar 09, 09, 9:05 amThe sequences I made on my website are standing on them selves. There is one play list where i add tree sequences together that will give you about a 40 minute class. You can find it on my website under video’s and its called: ” Full Spectrum Yoga Sequence – Standing, Sitting, Lying ” you can add the centering at the start as well.
Besides that I am working on a dvd as we speak, which will be finished soon, before the summer and on the dvd will be more than an hours practice….
As soon as it is finished it will be announced on my website and on my youtube channel. So look out for it!
I’m glad you enjoy the video’s,
Be well,
Esther

Dear Esther,
I’m so glad that you have replied and thank you so much for all the information you’ve provided, it means a lot. Now I have my daily routine, although I know it is not always easy in the beginning.
It’s great news that a DVD will be out soon. That will make all of your on-line students happy. And thank you for that as well.
Hope that everything goes well for you.

Comment by Ana Mar 09, 09, 7:43 pmMy sister is disabled and in a wheelchair most of the time. She cannot bend her back due to multiple surgeries. Is there a list of poses for her to try or do you have a short practice for people who cannot do all the floor work or the bending and twisting poses?
Comment by Mavis May 19, 09, 1:30 pmHello Mavis,
Comment by Esther Jun 01, 09, 9:21 amWhat your sister can start with is the video yoga for neck pain, as well as the one for stiff shoulders. Than there are the meditations which would be really good to practice. As well yoga for the office, some of the things you can do sitting in a chair. Moving the joints, being aware of the breath, moving as much of the body as possible are all good! I will still come up with a specific sequence for people who cannot do the floor work, bending and twisting, Its on my list to do!
Be well,
Esther
Esther, thank you so much for posting this very helpful yoga for beginners video. I have chondromalacia patella, so I am not supposed to squat or lunge, and degenerative disc disease in my lower lumbar region. Can you recommend adjustments or alternative poses for me?
Comment by Margaret Jun 04, 09, 6:42 pmThank you very much for your help!
Hi margareth,
Comment by Esther Jun 16, 09, 7:47 amI would prefer to make a private appointment with you and together with you look at a routine that would be good to your body. So really I would recommend finding a yoga teacher, if possible someone who studied yoga therapy and request a private session to help you figure out what to do and not to do. In the mean time just go with the poses that don’t require you to bend your knees to 90 degrees, there are plenty, and with regards to your lower back, you have to make sure you understand the techniques involved in keeping the lower back long, so not to compress anything. And again, to begin with it would be best to have someone there with you to check if you do the right thing.Hope this helps, Be well,
Esther
Esther,
I cant tell you enough, just how greatful I am that you are sharing your knowledge with us. I sincerly thank you for bringing yoga into my life. you are great!
