Yoga teaching
I am (late night again..) preparing to teach my class tomorrow morning. For me there is always the question, how much to prepare…
Sometimes not having prepared a class at all and just being in the moment let’s me teach the most wonderful flowing class. At the end of it students comment that it was exactly what they needed. Than again, sometimes I want to work on a particular theme a few classes long, or prepare my students for poses that I’d like to do later on and than It feels good to have a theme worked out and a sequence prepared.
What I do think is very important and every teacher should always try and do is to sense the energy in the room at the beginning of the class. Than to be flexible enough to let go of everything prepared and give what is needed instead.
Basically teaching itself and preparing for it, or not, or a little is a process that changes with experience. It has a lot to do with being relaxed enough to be in the moment as well, knowing and trusting that you have the knowledge and experience to create something beautiful right there and then!
Try out different ways of teaching, leave your comfort zone sometimes to discover hidden talents, to be able to teach from a source you didn’t know you had contact with … That is how you grow, progress and keep your teaching fresh..
I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject!
Esther

Comment by Tara O'Neill McPartlin Jan 13, 10, 5:40 pmI love your site! I am just beginning to teach yoga. And the advice I’ve been given is the same you give here. It is a challenge and growing experience for me to go about anything in this manner. But it’s teaching me to trust myself and I’m finding that to be very encouraging and rewarding!
Comment by Kristina Long Jan 18, 10, 7:27 pmNamaste Esther,
sending you many greetings from Prague. Thank you so much for all your effort, work and love…you put into your website. I love all your videos and enjoy reading your thoughts. I am truly blessed, that I can teach yoga and therefore my “work” is really the meaning and fulfillment of my life. I have found out many times, that I prepared my class and then had to change it completely, had to learn how to be flexible and not to cling to the plans too much. It’s been a very interesting and fun journey and I love the spontaneity of it.
In a week I’m leaving to go to India, Kerala for an enriching teacher training, so I’ll give my students your website and hope they’ll keep practicing:) and enjoy your videos as much as I do.

Comment by Esther Jan 30, 10, 10:23 amI wish for you to get a lot out of your teacher training.
be well,
Dear Esther,
I stumbled relatively consciously across your blog a week or so ago and am so pleased. I put it out there and the universe repsonded sweetly.
Thank you for your fabulous blog! I am studying to become a asana teacher so I can subtly share the knowledge of Yoga with others. I am coming up to assessment and am slightly nervous as I feel way behind and not entirely prepared. I keep on looking for distractions and my daily yoga practise is very irregular. Could you please offer some advice? I need to formulate a 4 week beginners class with a yoga buddy, as well as my own 8 week beginners program. Up until the 8th module it has been very spiritually driven and I am now looking to combine this with asana through my own essence. There is a lot to consider even in it’s simplicity.
I intend to share your beautiful words and movements with as many people as possible, starting with fellow course participants.
Love and happiness,

hi,
I just stumbled upon this website. I am a fanatic about yoga and all aspects of it. I loving this website and really appreciate the time you take for this site Esther. I was wondering where you teach, because i would love to attend one of your classes. I really want to learn more about yoga and be able to do more, so i was thinking of doing a teaching course. That way i can keep learning new stances and get deeper into my moves. Do you think that would be a good solution?
Again thank you for this wonderful website. i have become a devotee within mere seconds.

Comment by Shafali Aggarwal May 13, 10, 11:28 pmHello Shafali,
I teach in Ireland, west-cork. Doing a teacher training is wonderful, of course I can really recommend that. It is recommended to do yoga at least for a year or 2 to get the benefits though.
Good luck!
